All attorneys at Pitts, Hay & Hugenschmidt, P.A. are board-certified specialists in the areas of law in which they practice. The North Carolina State Bar allows attorneys to hold themselves out as specialists only in areas in which they are certified by the North Carolina State Board of Legal Specialization. The certification process includes a written examination, a minimum period of experience and specialized education, and the recommendations of other specialists.
Bob Pitts and Edward Hay were among the first North Carolina lawyers to be certified as Bankruptcy Law Specialists when the program began in 1987. They are certified as Specialists in both Consumer and Business Bankruptcy Law. Jim Hugenschmidt was in the first group to be certified as Family Law Specialists in 1989. Since that time, all three attorneys have been appointed by the North Carolina State Bar to serve on the committee which prepares the examinations and approves new applicants for certification.
